Dr Phil Manning
I am a Reader in Palaeobiology and head the Palaeontology Research Group in the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences (SEAES) at the University of Manchester. The STFC have appointed me as their Science in Society Fellow and I am also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Earth & Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania. I have always believed that classic approaches in palaeontology are unable to resolve many key biological questions about extinct vertebrates. My team and I have used techniques as diverse as evolutionary robotics, high performance computing, finite element modelling, LiDAR, high-resolution x-ray tomography, nanoindentation, as well as recently published work using synchrotron light sources. These cutting edge approaches have provided significant advances across the whole subject, generating high-profile international interest.

Media
Media exposure for the palaeontology research group in Manchester includes a recent series for National Geographic (‘Jurassic CSI’ six 1 hour episodes in February 2011) that will be transmitted in 180 countries. The new series showcases the application of new technologies and methods to vertebrate palaeontology. The documentary showcases research from the University of Manchester from the Faculty of Life Sciences (from neuroscience to locomotion), Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre (from DNA to proteomics), School of Materials (the new Henry Mosey X-Ray Centre), the Manchester Museum (Andrew Grey’s collaborative work with FLS and my work on various aspects of the University Museum collections), Computer Science (Finite element modelling on super computers), Wolfson Molecular Research Centre (proteomic and amino acid work), Williamson Molecular Research Centre (imaging and analysis of biomarkers) and the School of Earth, Atmospheric & Environmental Sciences (palaeontology to geochemistry). The team also contributed to all episodes of a recent BBC series on palaeontology (‘Fossil Detectives’ eight 30 minute episodes in 2009) raising the profile of the Manchester team further. The team plays an active role in the Manchester Museum public outreach program, contributing to open-days, lectures, workshops, fieldwork, etc. Recent media work includes:
• National Geographic Channel, new series in production. It will be transmitted in 180 countries through National Geographic International. I researched, wrote and presented six 1-hour documentaries highlighting advances in palaeontological science around the world.
• The Evolution of Skin (History Channel, December 2008) one-hour documentary with me as a contributor, talking at University of Manchester research.
• Fossil Detectives (BBC2, October-December 2008) & BBC4 (August-October 2008) eight 30 minute programs in a similar format to ‘Coast’. I co-presented seven of the eight programs. The series highlighted the geology and palaeontology of the UK and was co-produced by the Open University.
• Dinosaur Autopsy (National Geographic Television, December 9th 2007) 60 minute, National Geographic Channel special, co-producer Channel 4 (transmitted as an Equinox Special in Summer and Fall 2008). I was the lead scientist on Dinosaur Mummy project and was the main ‘presenter’ in the documentary.
• Tracking Dinosaurs (BBC1, October 2007), 30 minute documentary about my research in the American mid-west and UK. Nominated for a Royal Television Society Award in 2008.
• Dinosaur Face-off: Velociraptor v Ankylosaurus (Discovery Channel, December 2006) 60 minute special, I was a major contributor.
